Sit Down, Shut Down

Wednesday, August 12, in the Coal Creek Canyon Study Area in Jefferson County Open Space, located across the highway (CO 93) from the former site of the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons facility.

This walking and listening experience will serve as a kinetic complement to Casey Carter's To Use A Mountain (opening the festival) and Taylor Dunne and Eric Stewart's Off Country, (closing the festival) - two projects that deal with nuclear landscapes and accountability. Excerpts from interviews recorded by Dunne and Stewart about the social and environmental legacies of dismantling the Rocky Flats plant (and its subsequent transformation into a wildlife refuge) will be available to provide context for this short 1.2 mile walk.

We will reserve time after the hike to share thoughts and talk informally with Casey Carter, Eric Stewart, and Taylor Dunne about their research. The trail is not strenuous, but it is unmaintained, so we recommend sturdy walking shoes and headphones or earbuds.

Please reserve a ticket in advance (to secure a seat in a vehicle, and a bag lunch).

Listening will include interviews with Paula Elofson-Gardine and Susan Elofson-Hurstwith of The Environmental Information Network’s (EIN), journalist Len Ackland, and LeRoy Moore, co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center.
